“To the Irish man who helped me today on the bus: Thank you for explaining the train system and your conversation and your kindness. You made us optimistic for our time in Edinburgh and greater Scotland. Your daughter and your son are equally charming in different ways and you all three had beautiful blue eyes. If I had noticed, as my sister and cousin noticed, that you had no wedding ring, I would have lingered a little longer in our conversation and asked for a photo with you, our first Scottish friend.”
